Community Gardens

Community gardens are plots of land, typically owned by local governments or non-profit organizations, available to people desiring to grow food for themselves, their families, and their community. People are drawn to community gardens for many reasons; some due to a lack of personal garden space or fertile soil at their place of residence, others in order to foster a sense of neighborhood/community interdependence and cooperation.

There are many gardens throughout the North Coast's diverse towns. The North Coast Community Garden Collaborative (NCCGC) is a support network of and for community gardens and partners throughout Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties. All listings followed by an * are listed as part of the Garden Collaborative.

For more information on how to start or join a community garden in this region, for a map of community gardens in Humboldt County, visit the NCCGC website or contact the NCCGC at:

The produce grown in the two-acre garden provides the United Indian Health Services community with a wide range of fresh organically-grown foods. The produce is distributed to the community through a bi-weekly stand at the clinic, subscription to the Kay-Woi Basket membership program, and vouchers allocated to Diabetes Program and WIC clients.

The garden was launched in Fall 2009, with the hope of supplementing school lunches with the produce, and sending excess home to families in need. Almost all of the JCS classes have worked in the garden, with a long-term goal of creating a CSA to help to fund the garden while providing students both garden instruction as well as hands-on business experience.
