Food for People "Locally Delicious Food Fund"
2010
Six local farmers were contracted to grow specific crops for clients of Food for People (FFP), the local food bank. The "Locally Delicious Food Fund" was initially created with $3,000 of proceeds from the sale of Locally Delicious: Recipes and Resources for Eating on the North Coast, combined with a $3,000 match from St. Joseph Hospital' Community Benefit Department.
The Locally Delicious Food Fund generated over 4 tons of produce. The combined grant funds made it possible to contract with Neukom Family Farm, Earthly Edibles, Organic Matters Ranch, Green Fire Farm, Wild Rose Farm, and Camp Grant Ranch.
Crops were selected which provided a diversity of produce throughout the growing season and items that FFP knew their clients would know how to use and enjoy eating. The variety of produce included squash, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, chard, kale, spinach, beets, cauliflower and more!
2011
The Locally Delicious Food Fund grew through increased community fundraising - with $3000 given by St. Joseph Hospital and Locally Delicious respectively, complimented by $1,000 from individuals. The contracted farms included Green Fire Farm, Luna Farm, Earthly Edibles, Organic Matters Ranch, Neukom Family Farm, Valley Flower Vegetable, and Home Plate Farm.
Combined purchases from the seven farms allowed Food for People to distribute over 7,000 lbs of produce, through FFP's pioneering Choice Pantry, senior and homebound food distribution programs, and children’s programs. Free cooking classes featuring seasonal recipes increase the utilization of fresh produce.
Produce items the food bank received and distributed included zucchini and other varieties of summer squash, broccoli, red and green cabbage, cauliflower, onions, winter squash, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and sugar snap peas.
Participants in the Senior Brown Bag Program have complimented on how much they enjoy the fresh, superior quality local produce provided through this purchase. It’s a real treat to have access to first quality, extremely fresh, local, organic produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a priority for these programs, as well as all of Food for People’s programs, because it is an essential part of the diet one needs to be healthy and prevent diet-related disease.
2012
It is our hope that the Locally Delicious Food Fund will continue to grow in 2012. Help Food for People increase access to healthy, whole foods for everyone in our community.
